Deep Purple 은 음악적 변화에 따라 1~4기로 구분된다고 해요. 제 1기는, 보컬 Rod Evans, 베이스에 Nick Simpler, 키보드에 Jon Lord, 기타는 Ritchie Blackmore, 드럼에 Ian Paice 이고, 1기의 대표작은 그들의 세번째 앨범인 [ The Book of Taliesyn ] (1968) 입니다. 2기는 Rod Evans와 Nick Simpler 가 탈퇴하고 Ian Gillan과 Roger Glover를 새롭게 영입하게되죠. 이 시기를 Deep Purple 최고의 전성기라 부르며, 72년 발표한 [ Machine Head ] Smoke On The Water는 락 음악의 고전으로 평가받고 있습니다. 제 3기는 보컬 Ian Gillan, Roger Glove 탈퇴, Trapeze, 베이시스트 Glenn Hughes, 보컬 David Coverdale를 영입해서 활동. 이후 공식적으로는 해체를 선언하지만, 4기로 이어졌어요. 4기는 미국 태생의 Tommy Bolin (기타) 이 리치 블랙모어가 떠난 위기를 모면하려한 시기에요. 그러나 유능한 뮤지션인 토미 볼린에 의해 주도된 재즈/소울 스타일의 [ Come Taste The Band ] (1974)는 그룹의 헤비메틀 사운드와 융화되지 못했고, 결국 76년 영국 투어를 마친 후 활동을 접게됩니다.
