레어 어쓰 (Rare Earth)는 리듬 앤 블루스(R/B)와 소울(Soul)에
기반을 둔 하드록을 구사하며 초기에 모타운(Motown)의
한 빠에서 런닝타임 3분짜리인 Get Ready를 선보여 당시의 록
기류에 충격과 놀라움을 던져 주었다. 하드록이라면 의례 백인적인
형태의 록으로 여겨지던 것이 레어 어쓰의 등장으로 흑인적인
요소를 강하게 반영한 새로운 방식의 가능성을 보여주었다.
(당시 사람들은 레어 어쓰를 흑인으로 상상하였다).
이에 모타운(Motown Record Coporation)과 21분이 넘는 대곡인
Get Ready 엘범을 발매하게 된다(1969년). 1973년작 러닝타임
17분17초짜리 대곡인 Ma는 반복적으로 진행되는 베이스와 드럼,
퍼커션의 리듬파트위에 진행되는 변화무상한 사운드와 폭발직전의
흥분은 가히 사이키델릭의 진수라해도 과언이 아니다. 가사가 없는
곡으로 여자의 신음소리가 계속되는 Come With Me..
반복적인 어쿠스틱 기타위에 펼쳐지는 전기기타의 솔로는 듣는
사람을 무아지경에 빠뜨린다
대곡 MA 외에도 Born to wander, Tobacco Road, Losing You,
I just want to celebrate, Feeling All Right 그리고 너무도 귀에
익은 Hey Big Brother 등이 좋은 반응을 얻었다.
우리나라 한국 락의 대부인 기타리스트 신중현씨가 당시 가장 흠모
했던 그룹이 바로 Rare Earth 밴드 였다고 한다. Rare Earth 밴드는
The Sunliners 라는 이름으로 1961년 디트로이트에서 R&B 밴드로
시작했다. 색스폰 연주 및 보컬 Gil Bridges, 드러머 Pete Rivera
그리고 1962년 John Parrish가 베이스 기타로 합류한다.
Rod Richards가 1966년 기타리스트로, Kenny James가 키보드
연주자로 밴드에 추가 합류한 후 약 10여년간 지속되다 1978년
그룹은 완전히 해체된다.
