''60년대 말 재니스 조플린(Janis Joplin)의 등장이 그랬듯, ''70년대 등장한
패티 스미스(Patti Smith)역시 당대 음악계에 큰 반향을 일으키며 등장했다.
시카고에서 태어나 뉴저지에서 성장한 패티 스미스는 많은 사람들이 ''
펑크의 여장부''라 일컫듯, 가히 대모라는 표현이 어색하지 않은 인물이다.
사실 그녀의 음악이 ''78년 앨범 [Easter]를 제외하고는
상업적으로 혹은 대중적으로 성공을 거두지 못한 점을 고려한다면
그러한 평가는 다소 의외일 수 있다.
하지만 그녀의 음악에서는 귀로만은 들을 수 없는 ''무언가''가 우리를 흔든다.
소박하고 순수한 반면, 너무도 독특하고 진지한 그녀만의 세계관이 그것일 텐데,
일찍이 시를 포함한 문학과 미술에의 관심이
지대했던 그녀는 자신의 음악에 이러한 것들을 융화시켜 남성적 욕망의 분출구로 여겨지던
당시 록계에 여성적인 욕구의 태동을 알렸다.
''70년대, 록이 상업주의에 물들어가게 되고 선배 뮤지션들의 반항 정신이나 저항 정신들이
한낱 추억으로 치부 될 때쯤 등장한 패티 스미스는 그러한 시대적 배경 때문인지
더욱 큰 의미를 지닌 인물로 평가받아오고 있는 것이다.
하지만 결혼 후 활동이 뜸했던 그녀는 MC5의 기타리스트이기도 했던 남편의 죽음 이후
다시 음악을 하게 되고, 남편에 대한 애정이 담긴 [Gone Again](1996년)을 발표하면서
록계로 돌아오게 되었고 그 뒤에도 2000년에 [Gung Ho]를 발매한다
