다른 블루스 주자와 마찬가지로 적어도 우리에게 Robert Cray는
잘 알려져 있지는 않지만 그가 컨템포러리 블루스에서 차지하는
비중은 매우 남다르다.
게다가 그의 존재는 블루스 계에서는 좀 튀는 편이다.
그의 연주는 일품의 블루스 연주이기는 하지만 그의 노래,
특히 목소리나 창법 등은 블루스라고 하기에는 너무 부드럽고,
또 한편으로는 세련되었다.
밴드 구성도 그렇고, 블루스가 세부 장르에 상관없이
지니는 일종의 날 것의 느낌(rawness), 거친 느낌 등이 없다.
사포로 매끄럽게 갈아낸 듯한 느낌이 바로 Robert Cray의
블루스를 들으면서 느끼는 느낌이다.
Robert Cray는 정통 블루스와 세련되어서
우스울 수 있는 가짜 블루스(?)의 경계를 교묘하게 넘지 않으면서
독특한 블루스를 꾸준히 연주하고 있다.
그 결과 블루스답지 않다는 이유로 20년 이상 비평가나
블루스 원칙론자들의 집중 포격을 받아왔지만 여전히 Robert Cray는 건재하고,
여전히 독보적인 듯하다.
Robert Cray류의 블루스에서 특히 매력적인 것은
그의 아름다운 멜로디 진행과 세련되고 부드러운
보컬 및 밴드 어레인징이다. 하지만 부드러움 속에 날이 죽지 않은
Robert Cray 특유의 강한 피킹,
줄을 잡아채 강하게 뜯어내어 한음 한음이
또렷하게 연주되는 기타 톤은 멋진 대조를 이룬다.
