1994년 처음 결성되었을때는 케르베로스(Kerberos)라는 이름의 블랙 메탈의 영향을 받은 멜로딕
데스 메탈밴드였으나 현재는 그로울링 보컬인 안데르스 아콥손(Anders Jacobsson)이 키보디스트로
가입하면서 이름을 '드라코니안(Draconian)'으로 바꾸었다고 한다.
밴드 결성은 1994년이지만 정식 데뷔는 2003년으로 데모 앨범과 EP만을 만들던 긴 무명의 세월이 있었는데
이 데모 앨범에 쓰였던 곡들은 2006년에 The Burning Halo라는 베스트/컴필레이션 앨범으로 리메이크되어
다시 빛을 보게 되었다.
밴드가 주로 차용하는 주제로는 여타 고딕메탈 밴드들이 그러하듯 사랑과 슬픔도 있지만,
블랙메탈 밴드들의 앨범에서 나올법한 반 종교적인 테마의 곡들도 많은데 특히 2005년에 나온 두번째 정규 앨범인
Arcane Rain Fell의 전체적인 컨셉과 The Burning Halo의 "The Morningstar"라는 곡에서 이러한 특징이 잘 나타난다.
EP인 "Dark Oceans We Cry"에는 크툴루와 그레이트 올드 원을 찬양하는 노래도 한 곡 끼여있다!
세번째 정규앨범인 Turning Season Within(2008)에서는 상기한 어둡고 음습한 주제 대신
사랑과 슬픔만을 노래해서 조금 아쉽다는 팬도 있다.
여성보컬인 리사 요한손의 흐느끼는 듯한 목소리는 이러한 애절함을 더욱 배가시켜준다.
최근의 고딕메탈씬의 추세와는 다르게 90년대 둠/고딕메탈 밴드들을 생각나게 하는[3] 대중적이라고 보기 힘든 어두운
음악임에도 불구하고 10여년의 무명시절의 한을 떨쳐내는 듯 상당한 인지도를 획득한 밴드.
해외에서는 "고딕메탈씬의 메이저급 밴드들 중에 이제 믿을 만한 밴드는 트리스타니아와 파라다이스 로스트
그리고 드라코니안 밖에 없다"라는 식으로 선배 밴드들과 같은 선에서 언급되는 영광(?)을 차지하기도 했다.
국내에서도 요즘까지 이런 스타일을 고수한다며 기특하게 여기는 리스너들도 많다. 물론 정통을 고수한다는 점
이외에도 노래가 훌륭하기도 하다.
