화이트스네이크는 76년에 해산된 딥 퍼플의 영광을 이어 받아
그룹 레인보우와 함께 헤비메틀계의 대표적인 그룹이다.
이들이 결성된 것은 76년 딥 퍼플에서 탈퇴한 데이빗 커버데일이 77년 기타리스트 미키
무디의 도움으로 제작했던 솔로 데뷔 앨범 [Whitesnake]에 그 뿌리를 두고 있다.
이 앨범은 그가 딥 퍼플 시적에 쌓았던 락큰롤 최고의 보컬을 자랑하면서 큰 관심을 끌었고,
비록 영국에만 발매된 것이지만 획기적인 반응을 얻어내는 데 성공했고..
그룹 화이트스네이크가 결성된 것은 그로부터 얼마 후였다. 78년 초 National Hurray에서
활동하고 있던 베이시스트 닐 머레이가 동참하면서 그룹 결성 최초의 구상이 세워졌으며,
3월에는 미국에서 LP [Snakebite]를 발매했던 이어 딥 퍼플에서 함께 활동하였던
키보디스트 존 로드와 이언 페이스를 가입시키면서 본격적인 활동에 들어갔다
그로부터 1년 후인 79년에는 LP [Trouble]을, 80년에는 싱글 'Fool For Your Loving'으로 전세계적으로
히트를 기록하고. 이들은 [Love Hunter], [Live AT Hammersmith], [Ready An' Willing],
[Live In The Heart Of The City] 등을 계속 발표하면서,
위대한 딥 퍼플의 후예임을 입증했다
